LYNN SCHMITT
Foundations
Tuesday March 9 - March 13
Foundations is a class focused on teaching the essential building blocks of quilting in a creative and limitless way. By strengthening your design fundamentals, you'll gain skills and confidence that will carry forward into every project you create. Whether you're a confident beginner or an experienced quilter, we'll explore techniques and concepts that can be adapted to any skill level.
Build one of the featured projects or create something uniquely your own—with me at your side.
This class is less about completing one specific project and more about learning the design concepts that will change the way you approach quilting. We'll explore the "why" behind design decisions, discussing color, style, composition, and process. I'll encourage you to question traditional quilt "rules" and discover new ways of thinking about design.
We'll also explore a variety of quilting techniques, including several approaches to appliqué, along with piecing methods that emphasize precision, scale, and thoughtful construction rather than speed. You'll learn how to build depth and dimension into your work and finish your project with embellishments that become an integral part of the overall design.

"I think designers can sometimes be thought of as mediums, channeling a kind of energy wrought from a visual experience and holding it for a moment, just long enough to imbue that energy with form, line, and texture.
Once held or realized only then do they send it on its way, newly clad in color and context, to complete the composition to which this
“inspiration” has given birth.
We all have within us the spirit to be designers.
We only lack the confidence to see."
"My goal is to help you explore, experiment, and develop your own creative voice."

Lynn has worked in a design capacity for all of her professional life. She worked as an interior designer specializing in commercial interiors for over 30 years and now colors outside the lines as the owner of A Different Box of Crayons.
Lynn designs patterns and kits for the adventurous quilter using new techniques and an eclectic mix of cotton and alternative textiles. Initially her most popular projects focused on whimsical approaches to graphic imagery in quilts, but Lynn's current focus is on secondary patterning, color, textures, and eclectic textiles enhanced with wool appliqué.
Lynn loves to work with silk matka, raw silk and silk dupioni, both hand- dyed and woven wools, linen, home decor fabric, and certainly all scales and themes of cotton.
