Carmen Hartwig – Quilter, Multi-location Shop Owner, Color Expert, Llama Farmer and... the Event Coordinator for the premier creative retreat held annually on gorgeous Mackinac Island.

Carmen began her quilting journey in the late 1980's. She was a dairy farmer and discovered this provided her with "odd" hours between daily farm chores which she used to teach herself to quilt, perfect her skills and gain a strong work ethic.

In 2001, when the family retired from the dairy business, she opened her own quilt shop. Carmen has a great "eye" for color and is often sought out by customers looking for guidance on their next project. Over the years, Carmen has grown her business to include two Michigan store locations (Charlevoix and Bellaire) and has remained an active, trusted resource in the quilting world.
The Quilting Art Seminar began in 2009, when Mrs. Musser at the historic Grand Hotel envisioned hosting an intimate workshop with renowned textile artist Kaffe Fassett. From there, a cherished tradition was born. Each year, returning attendees have brought their daughters, husbands, partners, and families, turning the Seminar into a true destination experience. Now celebrating our 15th year, quilters take over the award-winning, family-owned, 18-acre Mission Point Resort and its historic Conference Center each spring.

Carmen is quick to tell you it's not just about taking a workshop, learning something new and connecting with like-minded quilters — it’s the place. With no cars allowed, all travel is by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage.

It’s something you can’t truly understand until you experience it.

Today, Carmen and her husband Dave live on a small farm in northern Michigan - trading cows for llamas, but never straying far from the land and lifestyle that continue to inspire her. Join her for an unforgettable quilting art adventure.
